Triadfoodies Favorite Things: A Gift Guide to Glorious Deliciousness

Below is the annual triadfoodies Favorite Things, aka Triadfoodies Gift Guide of Glorious Deliciousness. For your chance to win, visit YES! Weekly

Foodie fans and locavores…you know I look forward to this every year. For years, my family has created gift baskets full of our favorite things that we’ve discovered throughout the year. I dare say that at YES! Weekly, we might be making a tradition of it, as long as they’ll have me. So here’s the 2nd Annual Triadfoodies Gift Guide of Glorious Deliciousness. And once again we’re going to give our basket (or bag) full of goodies to a lucky winner (for details, click here, as the giveaway is by YES!).

These “favorite things” make perfect stocking stuffers or gifts on their own. My criteria…It must be fabulous and it must be local. We have such talented makers in our area that they deserve to be supported and loved. Another important aspect of these faves are that they are relatively easy to find. We can’t have you going all over town looking for these items. And in most cases you’ll be able find these items at a locally owned shop near you.

Shall we begin the Holiday Magic?

Brewmaster’s Malt Mustard

IMG_5323 (1)

We loved Al Wolf’s mustard when we featured its whole crunchy mustard seed, grainy goodness for our Super Bowl spread feature last January. And since then, we have not been without it. It’s the perfect German mustard made by a German brewmaster, with simple ingredients. The mustard, made with malted barley, is robust and thick and perfect on brats, hotdogs, smoked sausage, sandwiches, pork, you name it.  We like that Al, who came to his new country searching for the American dream, found it right here in the Triad of North Carolina as the brewmaster for Red Oak Brewing.  You get bonus local supporter points if you pair Malt Mustard with a Red Oak Lager and/or Lowe’s Foods SausageWorks Sausage, particularly anything with Texas Pete in it. You can find Malt Mustard at Lowe’s Foods and Whole Foods or buy online at brewmastersmalt.com

Sutler’s Spirits Gin

IMG_7211

True to form, we must always include a NC spirit when it comes to our gift guide. And we’ve never been without Sutler’s Gin since discovering it a few years ago. As a matter of fact, the bottle is so good looking that we just keep it out on display on our bar cart. The science that goes into distilling a quality spirit is one thing, but the art that goes into Sutler’s is on another level altogether. Owner Scot Sanborn has introduced flavors into his award-winning gin that set it apart from any other. It’s really great on the rocks, where you can really appreciate the botanicals. But I also love it with lemonade and a splash of soda. Plan a visit in the near future to Sutler’s distillery in Winston-Salem. You’ll get a lesson in flavor profiles and appreciation that you never expected.  Sutler’s is always holding super fun workshops and tours are available.  Find your Sutler’s at any North Carolina ABC store or your limited bottle amount on site at Sutlers. sutlersspiritco.com

Little Black Dressing Company It Takes 3 to Tango

IMG_1791 2

I know you know that quandary when you can’t decide which salad dressing you want. Do I want ranch? Thousand island? Bleu cheese? What if you could have all three dressings whipped into one? That’s LBD’s It Takes Three to Tango for you. You get a little of all three of these popular salad toppings. It’s just an amazing marriage of flavors and perfect for the indecisive type. The only thing is, I’ve decided that it’s one of the few salad dressings I actually want anymore. It is magic on a wedge salad or a Cobb or as a veggie dip. LBD Company is based in High Point and has a number of other interesting looking dressings but honestly I can’t stay away from 3 to Tango. You can find it in the refrigerated dressings section all along the east coast at local grocery markets as well as Lowe’s Foods and Harris Teeter. littleblackdressingco.com

Fool’s Gold Honey (Colony Urban Farm Store)

IMG_7530

If you love honey, you’ll love Colony Urban Farm’s Honey Bar. A honey bar! Honey on tap. Honey in jars. Honey! Honey! Honey! It’s paradise for honey-lovers and Winnie the Pooh too.

Just a few days before press time, Colony announced that they’re branding their honey as Fool’s Gold Honey Co. My favorite in the Colony line-up is the Bourbon-infused honey. You get a little essence of bourbon with their wonderful local honey, from bees they raise right here. Colony threw in a Southern Wildflower and Lavender-infused because …well, because Christmas! Really the choices for honey at Colony are endless. “Because eating honey is a very good thing to do.”—Pooh. There are some exciting things about to happen in the West End in Winston-Salem and these little bees at Colony are in the mix of it, so stay tuned for some fun buzz from these folks. You can find Colony Urban Farm and Fool’s Gold Honey at their new location (opening soon) at 492 West End Blvd, Winston-Salem. foolsgoldhoneyco.com

Batistini Farms Vanishing Grape White Balsamic

IMG_2977

Okay, okay, we know we’re not growing local olives or Modena grapes here. But Clemmons couple, Cindy and Tom Sephton, are getting us as close to the local experience as possible. About three years ago, the Sephtons began importing 100% Toscano extra virgin organic olive oil and balsamic vinegars from the heritage La Batistina farm in Tuscany.  So you get the real thing and you’re supporting a local business at the same time. We love the pure, clean taste, look and finish of the Vanishing Grape. Paired with a little olive oil on a spinach salad or drizzled on cheese, or you can go wrong with crusty bread. You can find Batistini Farms Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegars at Whole Foods, Wine Merchants in Winston-Salem, and online at b-farms.com.

Lily Leaf Soap-Handmade Soap and Spa Products

IMG_9174

No, it’s not food. It is made with food-like, organic ingredients by Tara Kercheval, who puts so much pride and hard work into her soaps, lotions, serums, scrubs and balms and they’ve been a favorite for several years now. Tara has been so devoted that she was able to leave behind her job and focus on her soap business full-time.  We love her soaps to use of course, but they make a great hostess gift or stocking stuffer. And they come in all kinds of fragrances but I like anything that reminds me of the spa, like the lime mint, eucalyptus, or grapefruit lavender. We also love the shave bar. Winner gets two soaps. You can find out more about Lily Leaf soaps, lotions, serums and balms by visiting their Facebook page.

The Traveling Bean Coffee

IMG_6290

Words cannot express the heartbreak over here when our beloved Beans Boro Coffeeshop announced its closing in Greensboro earlier this year. But, let not your (or our) heart be troubled. Roast Master, Kyle Burge, is back in his hometown on Kernersville, right downtown, under a new name. The Traveling Bean is located on Main Street with plenty of roasting action and a family-friendly environment to enjoy your pick-me-up. Winner gets a pound of whole bean Colombian, known for its full, rich flavor with chocolate notes. The Traveling Bean is located at 126-A South Main Street, Kernersville. thetravelingbean.com

Cackalacky Beer-B-Q Nuts

IMG_5942

Also making a return appearance from our “Super Bowl” special, Cackalacky’s BeerBQ peanuts are the perfect party snack, late night snack, car snack…well, you get it. Our absolute fave of all the nuts out there. And we’ve tried a ton. They’re just  big and special. Trust us. You can find Cackalacky nuts and their other products at retailers across the state, including Lowe’s Foods and Harris Teeter. cackalacky.com

Black Mountain Chocolate Fruit Cake

IMG_2602

And the Triadfoodies Gift Guide of Glorious Deliciousness (and Giveaway) just wouldn’t be the same without the Queen of Fruitcakes. Like I’ve said before, it’s boozy and so chocolatey and will make you completely forget about that heavy, stumpy thing you once called fruit “cake.” BMC’s fruitcake is made with next door neighbor’s Broad Branch Distilling Company’s Nightlab 1.0. And you can taste to too. Consider this your grown-up dessert and enjoy!  blackmountainchocolate.com

So there you have it, my gift guide of favorite things.  And you can win this treasure! Find this post on the YES! Weekly Facebook page where you’ll find out how you can win it. Winner will be announced on December. 18. And I’ll be showing this collection of awesomeness …er…glorious deliciousness on Thursdsay, December 14 on WFMY 2’s Good Morning Show. So set your DVR for 6:45am if you aren’t up and going at that crazy hour.

We’re on the Rock & a new Chef’s Table

Foodies!

We have moved.

We have followed our hearts and our dream of living in the absolutely stunning North Carolina mountains. Specifically right up near Banner Elk. And man oh man, is it beee-uuuu-teeee-ful!

And seriously, I’ll explain it all later but the most important thing right now is to let you know that we have jumped right in and we’re kicking off this new journey in life with another Chef’s Table...this one with Chef Sam Ratchford of Vidalia Restaurant and Wine Bar.

FullSizeRender

I met Chef Sam a few years ago when he walked away with the coveted Red Chef’s Jacket at Competition Dining in Winston-Salem. I’ve eaten at his restaurant too, which is why it’s so obvious that we’d want to inaugural Rockfoodies Chef’s Table to be at Vidalia, where Sam and his wife, Alyce, do classic southern dishes with a twist. And their dedication to local farms is impressive.

static1.squarespace

Here’s where you can get your tickets! Seating is limited and we look forward to seeing you there!

PS: I promise a blog  post about the move and why we did it and the house that was supposed to be THE house and our kitchen update (which is about to happen, along with getting a pantry) is coming soon!

XOXO

All Local Super Bowl Party Goods & Giveaway

We are stocking our party this year with all local party goods and we’re going to show you how we did it. Heck we’re going one step beyond that and we’re GIVING AWAY a shopping tote of all these goodies to a lucky winner.

It’s all NC baby…come to think of it…probably should’ve done it last year when our own Carolina Panthers kept pounding all the way to the big game. But …oh well. You know you don’t watch the game for the …game. Especially when it’s not your team.

Whether you’re in it for the Falcons or the Pats, it’s all about the food anyway. Here’s what we like for your big game party.

Mozzarella Fellas Pizza, Winston-Salem

gb0a2983

No Super Bowl party is complete without pizza. One of our favorites is the Siciliano from Mozzarella Fellas. This local pizza joint in Winston-Salem is relatively new and business is jumping. Super fresh pizza dough made daily, fresh pasta and locally sourced ingredients. Gluten got you down? You can even order your pizza gluten-free. Our winner will receive a $20 gift card that’s good any time and you can order whatever you like. We hope it’s pizza. PS…if you live in Winston-Salem, Chow Time Taxi can deliver your pizza right to your door. How’s that for teamwork? mozzarellafellas.com   chowtimetaxi.com

West End Coffeehouse Brownies, Winston-Salem

If you were to ask my family, they’d tell you that actually no Super Bowl party is complete without a fresh batch of brownies. And Doritos. But ‘ritos aren’t local so they don’t make the list. But get this. West End Coffeehouse has these delicious, thick, chewy, fudgy brownies that are my little boy’s favorite thing in the world. And a single brownie is as big as his face. But for a reasonable $12, you can order a whole platter of brownies. West End Coffeehouse cuts that baby into 8 squares for their shop, but you can feed your party and then some as that sheet of brownies can easily be cut into 16, 32 or even 64 if you want little bites. They’re fantastic. Winner gets a $20 gift card which will allow you plenty of room for gelato and coffee. For more info on West End Coffeehouse, follow them on Facebook. Chow Time Taxi delivers for West End Coffeehouse too.

Green Mountain Gringo Chips & Salsa

img_2304

Of course, you need chips and salsa at your party right? We got you covered with T.W. Garner’s (makers of Texas Pete) Green Mountain Gringo. The salsa comes in a variety of flavors and heat and is some of the best jarred salsas at the store. The chips….what can we say about the chips? Organic, non-GMO and they taste almost kettle-cooked. Super tasty. They come in convenient strips to make for fun dipping. Winner gets two jars of salsa and a bag each of the white corn and blue corn variety of chips. The salsa is found at about every grocery store around, but the chips are slightly harder to come by as of late and found at Whole Foods In Winston-Salem. But the internet can be your friend…greenmountaingringo.com

SausageWorks Sausage

img_2252

When we want smoked sausage, Italian sausage, kielbasa, brats, we head over to Lowe’s Foods for some SausageWorks. The varieties of sausage are seemingly endless. Really interesting flavors are available in addition to traditional. My favorite is Texas Pete but your game day might require a smoked or bratwurst variety. You do you. It’s all delicious. Lowe’s Foods is giving our winner a pound each of the famous HoppyYummy (infused with Foothills Beer) and Texas Pete (infused with …Texas Pete).

Brewmaster’s Malt Mustard

And to join with your sausages in a delicious play, mustard made with unfermented beer. Al Wolf is a brewmaster at Red Oak Brewing. He takes malted barley and adds super simple ingredients and crunchy mustard seeds for a really tasty, different mustard that’s great in recipes and on sandwiches, worthy of a championship trophy. Al knows a good bit about beer and mustard. He’s a German Braumeister and moved to the states seven years ago to take his gig at Red Oak Brewing. You can catch find his mustard at a number of local stores including Whole Foods, Deep Roots and Lowe’s Foods and if you’re lucky, you can meet him out sampling one day dressed head to foot in traditional Bavarian Lederhosen. Al is so nice and he’d love to speak with you about his mustard and beer. You can also order online brewmastersmalt.com

Uncle Chris Pimento Cheese (Smoky Habanero)

img_2233-2

We love our pate of the South, i.e. pimento cheese. We really love Uncle
Chris’ approachable and traditional spreads, but our favorite is by far is the Smoky Habanero. Look for it in most stores including Lowe’s and stay up to date with them on Facebook. The pimento cheese as just the right amount of kick. You can sizzle up some crumbled sausage and mix it together, dollop it on nachos, put it in a sandwich but what we really hope you do is put it on a pork rind or a cracker (not included) with….

Miss Jenny’s Pickles

img_2232

That’ right. If you’ve been paying attention you know I love a sweet and tangy pickle with a sharp and spicy pimento cheese. All the players are here in our “Super” Game Day tote. Miss Jenny’s + Uncle Chris = Touchdown. I love the Habanero Bread & Butter with the aforementioned pimento cheese, but if that seems too much heat for you, never fear. The Pickle Lady herself was having the best pickle day and the winner gets two jars of Miss Jenny’s. Habanero and Traditional B & B. Found at Lowe’s at lots of local stores as well as Trader Joe’s. missjennyspickles.com

Cackalacky Beer B Q Nuts

img_2173

Cackalacky’s name is synonymous with North Carolina goodness. The Cheerwine Sauce is already close to our heart. The new nut that’s been added to the line-up does not disappoint. It’s a little sweet and a little bit spicy with a great BBQ rub and a hint of beer. You can pick these up at Lowe’s Foods as well. Put one tub out at the party and leave the other for yourself. You deserve it. Winner also gets a sporty winter scarf to show off your Cackalacky spirit. Cheers! cackalacky.com

Foothills Beer

img_2248

Yes, you know I wouldn’t leave you hanging without beer. What better beer to celebrate your North Carolina pride than Foothills.  We all have our favorites, from Carolina Blonde to People’s Porter, Hoppyum or the delightful Jade IPA. Foothills is found all over the place. Our winner will get a special beer that will first be featured at the pub on Fourth Street in Winston-Salem and the Brewery and Tasting Room across town. Then they’ll be available in stores and statewide. Every year, Foothills rolls out new limited release beer on a near monthly basis. They’re calling it the #CraftHappiness IPA of the Month.  For 2017, each new roll-out will be a craft beer that has a meaningful impact, to create awareness for causes that are not so happy. Our winner will receive a bomber of the Domicile IPA.  Knowing that homelessness and lack of shelter and security happen right here in our back yard, the folks at Foothills hope the sales of Domicile can make an impact to a charitable organization or two (or more). Says Foothills, “Each month we’ll bring attention to a different need – a different opportunity to craft happiness for those in our community and in our world.  Being happy doesn’t mean everything is good. It simply means you see the good in everything.”Foothillsbrewing.com

Talk about team spirit. After all, we are all in this together.

We hope you see the good in our Triad area food artisans and restaurants. We think they’re all winners and we love to celebrate them with you. Follow YES! Weekly on Facebook for your chance to win a grocery tote full of these party goods. Winner will be announced the week of Super Bowl LI. See us show the goodies live on the air of WFMY’s Good Morning Show  on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:50am.
