Triadfoodies Favorite Things & Holiday Gift Guide

Happy Ho-Ho-Holidays, foodies. It’s our absolute favorite time of year and we are back once again to share with you so many of our favorite things and drop them all into our annual Holiday Gift Guide of Glorious Deliciousness. I forget how many years we’ve done this, but we are thrilled to be back with our favorites of 2022. We hope this guide inspires you to grab a an item or two for a loved one’s stocking or re-create this guide and be more popular than Santa himself. Everything you see here is available at local markets and of course, online. And we are happy to be giving away this basket to a lucky winner. Keep reading to find out how to win.

sippin SNAX

Our newest discovery! When it comes to noshing, a little snack mix can’t be beat. Have you ever sat at the bar, drink in hand and found yourself munching away at the salty bar snack? Melissa Wallace definitely had her eureka moment when she thought of sippin SNAX, a selection of crunchable goodies that specifically pair with wine, beer, and cocktails. With seasoned pretzels or peanuts for beer and red wine, the choices are quite fun. sippin SNAX, like all of our gift guide items, make great stocking stuffers, but they are the perfect housewarming gift. If you know a realtor, tell them about these treats for their client baskets, or you can be the star of the gift giving when you arrive with your bountiful selection. We highly encourage the sampler pack which can be delivered right to your door. We find ours at Deep Roots Market in Greensboro and sippinsnax.com

Whole Hive Honey

Your breakfast biscuit just leveled up…literally. From up here in the High Country, Whole Hive Honey has enjoyed several years of popularity and if you’re a visitor to the Boone area, you’ll see their honey on many shelves. The Hive recently released “Sweet Heat,” a hot honey that is incredible. Enjoy it on toast or biscuits, but I highly encourage you to add it to homemade dressings and sauces to add the slightest kick. Its side kicks are the maple flavored honey that is spectacular in its own right and great in a glaze for roasted chicken or your holiday ham or on a biscuit with a little sprinkling of salt, and the Better than Butter biscuit honey is a newbie as well. You’ll be reaching for these sweeties again and again. wholehivehoney.com

Gorilla Grains

My love for the Gorilla runs long and strong. We are rarely without our favorite granola in our home. I’m pretty sure that a long, long time ago, Gorilla Grains was one of our first published “favorite things,” and so he makes his return for 2022. This year’s holiday spice tastes like a Moravian Sugar Spice cookie so we encourage you to seek that out online or in stores like Buie’s Market and the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market, Saxapahaw General Store, or buy online. I am telling you, this granola…it’s righteous…Its crispy, buttery goodness is unforgettable. There is absolutely no other granola like it. gorillagrains.com

Spicewalla Spice Blend Buxton Chicken Rub

If you’ve been to Asheville’s Buxton Hall, you know the flavors of smoking and grilling and Southern goodness abound. If you’ve been to Meherwan Irani’s Chai Pani then you know why it’s a James Beard Award winner. Irani’s spice company, Spicewalla, has created Buxton’s Chicken Rub and let me tell you, you will use it on all the things. Yes, chicken, but also roasted potatoes, veggies, pork chops, steak, next year’s turkey. It is wonderful. You can order Spicewalla online or you can find it in some local stores but do not deny yourself a trip to the spicewallabrand.com where the choices and flavors are seemingly endless.

Fisher’s Christmas Whiskey

I feel like I’d be remiss if I didn’t add a spirit to our holiday gift guide. Fainting Goat Spirits Christmas whiskey can be a bit hard to find once it’s released. This infusion of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and orange peel is bottled in limited quantities at the distillery for a short time. And if by the time you read this, the ship has sailed, let not your heart be troubled. Look for it again next year. It’s best to get on their email list. The winner gets a bottle of this incredibly popular spirit. Check out FaintingGoatSpirits.com for more information or visit the distillery in downtown Greensboro.

Batistini Farms Vanishing Grape Balsamic

From dressings on salad (ahem, toss some pickles in it…ahem) to drizzles on risotto, this white grape balsamic from Clemmons’ Batistini Farms is liquid gold in my house. It is tangy and sweet and will forever have a place in our pantry and in our gift guide. Find it b-farms.com.

Black Mountain Chocolate Fruit Cake

She’s the living Queen of our Favorite Things. Take her to a party and be the “popular one.” Pair it with some sipping SNAX for a salty sweet treat. Pick up more than one as she freezes great. Enjoy her all season long and find her at Black Mountain Chocolate in Winston-Salem. blackmountainchocolate.com

Now you have your list, no need to check twice. So go out and support local small businesses. We will be giving the entire contents of the holiday gift guide to a lucky winner. Follow YES! Weekly on Facebook leave a comment on the gift guide post about what you’re most excited to try. We will announce the winner on Friday, December 9, and the winner can collect their basket on or after December 14.

“Lusty” Mustard Pepper Burgers + Giveaway

Hi, friends!
The past couple of weeks I’ve been collaborating with Lusty Monk Mustard, coming up with different creations like this Chicken Schnitzel. My friends at NC’s Lusty Monk have jumped on board for a giveaway of their trio pack of mustards! Keep reading for the recipe and how to win.

Way back 150 years ago when I worked at the Village Tavern in Reynolda Village in Winston Salem, my favorite burger was called the Mustard Pepper Burger. All I know about it is that it had a peppery kick and the bun was spread with dijon. It was kind of like an au poivre meets Dijon and very simple with lettuce, tomato and cheese if you wanted it. It’s no longer on the menu but it was such a good burger, I decided to make my own with Lusty Monk Original Sin mustard. I tried this recipe a number of times and the last time, I got it just right.

Mustard is inside the mixture with a pepper crust

The burger meat (I used local Shipley Beef) is “marinated” with the mustard, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt and plenty of pepper. The mustard inside the meat mixture is key and there needs to be a crust of pepper on the burger. I like to sear this burger in a cast iron skillet so I don’t lose any pepper and because it makes such a good crust, plus at the time of this posting we were 25 degrees with gusts of 20 and that’s not grilling weather. Once the burger is cooked, place on buns and top with a bit more mustard and your choice of fixings. It really doesn’t need much in the way of toppings. Honestly, I never want mayo on a burger unless it’s a patty melt but something about mayo is good with this Lusty Mustard burger. Let me know if you make this and what you think. If you do make the Lusty Mustard Pepper Burger, tag me on Insta!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 lbs of ground beef
2 tbs. Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp. garlic powder
2-4 tbs. Lusty Monk Original Sin mustard (the more you use, the kickier it is)
Salt to taste
Freshly ground pepper (enough to make a crust)

4 quality hamburger buns (potato or brioche)
Toppings of choice (lettuce is good here and I like a spread of mayo on this burger)

Instructions:
Mix the ingredients for your meat mixture and allow to rest in the refrigerator for about an hour. When time to cook, patty the meat out to your desired size. We like 1/3 pound burgers. Crank your skillet to a high heat and add a little oil to prevent any sticking. Sear the burgers on either side until desired doneness. Add cheese if you want. Muenster or Swiss are good here but you don’t need cheese. Remove from heat to a plate to rest for 5 minutes. Build your burger with more mustard and toppings of choice. Enjoy!

Fun note: My hubby added the sweet Into Temptation mustard to his burger and really liked the contrast of the peppery crust and spicy kick of the original.

We’re giving away a trio pack of Lusty Monk Mustard featuring Original Sin (a grainy dijon), sweet IntoTemptation (a grainy honey) and Burn in Hell (a spicy Chipotle). Want to win? Comment below and for additional chances to win, head over to my Facebook and Instagram and comment how you’d love to use these mustards. I’ll draw a winner next week, March 5.

Triadfoodies’ Favorite Things: 2020’s Holiday Gift Guide of Glorious Deliciousness!

What. A. Year it has been. Fa La La Lawdy!

We’ve been quarantined and kept from our friends, our restaurants and our monthly Chef’s Tables (we barely squeezed one in back in March before the world shut down). We miss you all very much. Honestly, with all that’s going on and all that’s not, I haven’t had a lot of desire to hop on here and blog. There aren’t restaurant reviews to churn out and I haven’t really kept track of my recipe making (except on insta…I do post pics of food). But! Pandemic or no, we’ve had a few opportunities to discover new local yummies and behold! With some new to us and some that have finally found their rightful place in our gift guide, here are just a few of our favorite things from 2020. Keep reading for your chance to win the entire list! We hope you’ll mask up and get on out there and support your local shops. All of the items mentioned make for great snacks and stocking stuffers.

Triadfoodies Favorite Things Holiday Gift Guide

Carolina Kettle Potato Chips

Specifically, the Sir Walter Cream Cheese & Chive. A riff on the sour cream and onion, they’re slightly less tangy than the latter but definitely pack a flavorful punch. We actually love all the Carolina Kettle chips, founded by Josh Monahan. You can find these chips at Mast General Store, Wine Merchants Bodega and quite a few local markets. Check the website carolinakettle.com for locations.

Memaw’s Cheese Tiddies

I hope y’all know what a Memaw is. The name is cute and attention getting and the little cheese crackers are great for snacking. Cheese Tiddies are brought to you by the same folks who make the above Carolina Kettle chips, 1in6 Snacks, so they know their …well…snacks. Give them a read when you get a chance as the company gives back to the local food bank with every purchase. You can find Cheese Tiddies at local markets, Mast General Store and online. 1in6snacks.com.

A La Brava Hot Sauce

This Winston-Salem hot sauce is gaining quite the popularity around the Triad. I love the Diablo on chicken wings mixed with a little butter and honey. Owner Marcos Medina is giving the winner one of all three hot sauces, Diablo, Habanero and La Mayan. You can find A La Brava at Wine Merchants and other independent shops, Lowes Foods, Publix, Harris Teeter, Deep Roots, GMart and several other stores in NC, SC, VA and TN. Visit goalabrava.com for more info.

Anson Mills Carolina Gold Rice

If you know, you know. Honestly, Anson Mills heirloom rice is top of the line and a chefs best friend. It is a little bit pickier to cook with than traditional store bought rice, even the highfalutin ones, but it’s so worth the extra step, which basically requires you to spread it out in a baking sheet and put it in the oven to help “dry it out” after cooking. It smells like popcorn when it cooks. It elevates any dish you prepare. No wonder it’s the choice of chefs all over. And our friends at Anson Mills not only included the Carolina Gold Rice, but also some grits! Happy day! Ansonmills.com

Smoke City Meats Pimento Cheese 833 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC

As you know, pimento cheese doesn’t pack well outside of refrigeration. I love all of Chef Matt Pleasant’s pimento cheeses but you really ought to try the White Pimento Cheese with white cheddar, parmesan and olives. Truists will also love Chef’s original and spicy pimento cheese. Follow SCM for specials, take homes and recipe ideas. Winner receives a $25 gift card for whatever they want in the store. We hope it includes pimento cheese….and MEAT (obviously). smokecitymeats.com

Wine Merchants & Vin 205 Bodega 205 S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC

Remember pre-pandemic when I had that Chef’s Table at Vin 205 and it was incredible?? As in back in February? Doesn’t that seem so long ago? And doesn’t it also make sense that we’ve had three Chef’s Table’s there? Sure does! Well, honestly I can’t decide what my favorite thing about Wine Merchants is. Caleb? Yes. Alan? Yes. Justin? Yes. The wine? Yes, yes. The bodega with all the great shopping, confections, local meat, pasta, snacks? Heck yes! The take and bake items? Oh please, absolutely. So winner gets a $25 gift card and then you can meander and get whatever you want, like a take and bake and wine. You deserve it. vin205.com

Black Mountain Salted Caramel Bar + Drinking Chocolate standing in for the BMC Fruit Cake

So because 2020 is being so 2020ish and all, Black Mountain Chocolate did some moving (literally) and shaking and at the time of this posting, they were only taking pre-orders of seasonal items. We have loved the Queen of Fruitcakes since the inception of our Favorite Things and it’s still available to order. To play it safe, BMC is giving the winner a candy bar, chocolate to drink and a $20 gift card. So, the lucky winner will also get to shop at the brand new Black Mountain Chocolate located in the Innovation Quarter. blackmountainchocolatefactory.com

Now, get shopping! But….how to win??
We’d like to thank all the makers above for giving these items for our gift bag of gloriously delicious favorite things!

Please, foodies, we implore you to support these and all local shops this season and the sooner the better. It has been so hard for so many and your support is keeping them alive. Comment below on what holiday item you are looking forward to trying this year OR drop any new finds in the comment section. We’ll give them a try and maybe they’ll make it to our finds next year. By commenting here or on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll also be entered to win the ENTIRE Favorite Things Gift Guide as a goodie bag. And I’ll have some runners-up too, who will take home one of each A La Brava Hot Sauces as well as Cheese Tiddies and Carolina Kettle Chips.

****IMPORTANT****Winner will be announced Sunday, December 13 and must be able to take possession of the goodie bag in person. NO SHIPPING. Winner should expect to pick up the goodies on Wednesday, Dec. 16 (weather permitting), in Winston-Salem and can be contactless, if preferred. I have arranged that the winning bag can be picked up at Wine Merchants at 205 S. Stratford Road if an in-person hand-off cannot be made.

As always, foodies, thank you for reading and supporting local! Merry Christmas and may your New Year be blessed and healthy.

GIVEAWAY!! New Wewalka USA Pie Crust

UPDATE: Congratulations to Julie Groce and Jenny Lambeth, you’ve won 5 Wewalka pie crusts! Also updated to re-direct you to this post, with up-to-date ingredients and instruction .

Foodies!! I have a giveaway for you!

If summer is a time for cobblers then surely it’s also a time for pie!

Fruity, light, summery pies that you don’t have to bake a crust for because this HERE crust is ready to be rolled out and filled and topped and you do whatever you want to it.

Or creamy, decadent pies…

Or savory pies! Yes, in summer. Or for freezing because it’s summer.

The best kind of pie is one that’s made FOR you but if you must make it your own little self, it should be just so simple. I hate flour going everywhere. And that’s one of the reasons I’ve loved working with Wewalka European Bakery Style doughs in the past (click here for recipes). The pizza crusts, danish roll, crescent rolls…ALL of it..so easy, ready to roll out on parchment to make my life less messy and time consuming. Plus, the doughs are so delicious that I’d rather have a sure thing than hope I get my crust right, ‘no what I’m saying? This new Wewalka crust is 25% thicker and is completely lard-free.

IMG_9319

So comment below for a chance to win 5..I say… 5!!! Wewalka pie crusts. You can make a whole plethora of pies filled with blueberries or cherries or lemon or chocolate. Or chicken or buttermilk. And that’s what I made with my Wewalka pie crust. My very favorite pie..Buttermilk Pie. It’s kind of a like a vanilla chess pie. Not too sweet, with an ever so barely there tang, with delicate notes of vanilla and lemon. Yum. To say this is an old-fashioned, old as the hills, granny old recipe is an understatement.  There are recipes all over the internets and mine is a combine of things I like. I even add collagen peptides to mine to add some extra protein.

I might go make it again this afternoon.

Buttermilk Pie

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs, large, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk ( I used fat-free but you can use full fat)
  • 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (or just another teaspoon of extract)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (optional but yummy)
  • 1 prepared Wewalka pie crust

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the pie crust per package instructions and place in a 9 inch pie dish, fluting the crust as you see fit. As you can see above, I’m terrible at it.  For easier transport,  place dish on a cookie pan.

Directions:

  1. Beat eggs until foamy. Add butter, flour, sugar and beat until fluffy.
  2. Add buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice and nutmeg.
  3. Beat until smooth.
  4. Pour into prepared Wewalka crust.
  5. Bake for 45-55 minutes until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool completely.

Enjoy with whipped cream (or not) and/or berries (or not). I like mine plain. But I’m a simple girl.

IMG_1705 2

You can find Wewalka at most major grocers locally…Harris Teeter, Publix and Lowe’s.

Comment below for your chance to win! This is taking place across Facebook and Instagram so post there too! I’ll choose a winner on June 11. What is your FAAAAVE pie?

All Local Super Bowl Party Goods & Giveaway

We are stocking our party this year with all local party goods and we’re going to show you how we did it. Heck we’re going one step beyond that and we’re GIVING AWAY a shopping tote of all these goodies to a lucky winner.

It’s all NC baby…come to think of it…probably should’ve done it last year when our own Carolina Panthers kept pounding all the way to the big game. But …oh well. You know you don’t watch the game for the …game. Especially when it’s not your team.

Whether you’re in it for the Falcons or the Pats, it’s all about the food anyway. Here’s what we like for your big game party.

Mozzarella Fellas Pizza, Winston-Salem

gb0a2983

No Super Bowl party is complete without pizza. One of our favorites is the Siciliano from Mozzarella Fellas. This local pizza joint in Winston-Salem is relatively new and business is jumping. Super fresh pizza dough made daily, fresh pasta and locally sourced ingredients. Gluten got you down? You can even order your pizza gluten-free. Our winner will receive a $20 gift card that’s good any time and you can order whatever you like. We hope it’s pizza. PS…if you live in Winston-Salem, Chow Time Taxi can deliver your pizza right to your door. How’s that for teamwork? mozzarellafellas.com   chowtimetaxi.com

West End Coffeehouse Brownies, Winston-Salem

If you were to ask my family, they’d tell you that actually no Super Bowl party is complete without a fresh batch of brownies. And Doritos. But ‘ritos aren’t local so they don’t make the list. But get this. West End Coffeehouse has these delicious, thick, chewy, fudgy brownies that are my little boy’s favorite thing in the world. And a single brownie is as big as his face. But for a reasonable $12, you can order a whole platter of brownies. West End Coffeehouse cuts that baby into 8 squares for their shop, but you can feed your party and then some as that sheet of brownies can easily be cut into 16, 32 or even 64 if you want little bites. They’re fantastic. Winner gets a $20 gift card which will allow you plenty of room for gelato and coffee. For more info on West End Coffeehouse, follow them on Facebook. Chow Time Taxi delivers for West End Coffeehouse too.

Green Mountain Gringo Chips & Salsa

img_2304

Of course, you need chips and salsa at your party right? We got you covered with T.W. Garner’s (makers of Texas Pete) Green Mountain Gringo. The salsa comes in a variety of flavors and heat and is some of the best jarred salsas at the store. The chips….what can we say about the chips? Organic, non-GMO and they taste almost kettle-cooked. Super tasty. They come in convenient strips to make for fun dipping. Winner gets two jars of salsa and a bag each of the white corn and blue corn variety of chips. The salsa is found at about every grocery store around, but the chips are slightly harder to come by as of late and found at Whole Foods In Winston-Salem. But the internet can be your friend…greenmountaingringo.com

SausageWorks Sausage

img_2252

When we want smoked sausage, Italian sausage, kielbasa, brats, we head over to Lowe’s Foods for some SausageWorks. The varieties of sausage are seemingly endless. Really interesting flavors are available in addition to traditional. My favorite is Texas Pete but your game day might require a smoked or bratwurst variety. You do you. It’s all delicious. Lowe’s Foods is giving our winner a pound each of the famous HoppyYummy (infused with Foothills Beer) and Texas Pete (infused with …Texas Pete).

Brewmaster’s Malt Mustard

And to join with your sausages in a delicious play, mustard made with unfermented beer. Al Wolf is a brewmaster at Red Oak Brewing. He takes malted barley and adds super simple ingredients and crunchy mustard seeds for a really tasty, different mustard that’s great in recipes and on sandwiches, worthy of a championship trophy. Al knows a good bit about beer and mustard. He’s a German Braumeister and moved to the states seven years ago to take his gig at Red Oak Brewing. You can catch find his mustard at a number of local stores including Whole Foods, Deep Roots and Lowe’s Foods and if you’re lucky, you can meet him out sampling one day dressed head to foot in traditional Bavarian Lederhosen. Al is so nice and he’d love to speak with you about his mustard and beer. You can also order online brewmastersmalt.com

Uncle Chris Pimento Cheese (Smoky Habanero)

img_2233-2

We love our pate of the South, i.e. pimento cheese. We really love Uncle
Chris’ approachable and traditional spreads, but our favorite is by far is the Smoky Habanero. Look for it in most stores including Lowe’s and stay up to date with them on Facebook. The pimento cheese as just the right amount of kick. You can sizzle up some crumbled sausage and mix it together, dollop it on nachos, put it in a sandwich but what we really hope you do is put it on a pork rind or a cracker (not included) with….

Miss Jenny’s Pickles

img_2232

That’ right. If you’ve been paying attention you know I love a sweet and tangy pickle with a sharp and spicy pimento cheese. All the players are here in our “Super” Game Day tote. Miss Jenny’s + Uncle Chris = Touchdown. I love the Habanero Bread & Butter with the aforementioned pimento cheese, but if that seems too much heat for you, never fear. The Pickle Lady herself was having the best pickle day and the winner gets two jars of Miss Jenny’s. Habanero and Traditional B & B. Found at Lowe’s at lots of local stores as well as Trader Joe’s. missjennyspickles.com

Cackalacky Beer B Q Nuts

img_2173

Cackalacky’s name is synonymous with North Carolina goodness. The Cheerwine Sauce is already close to our heart. The new nut that’s been added to the line-up does not disappoint. It’s a little sweet and a little bit spicy with a great BBQ rub and a hint of beer. You can pick these up at Lowe’s Foods as well. Put one tub out at the party and leave the other for yourself. You deserve it. Winner also gets a sporty winter scarf to show off your Cackalacky spirit. Cheers! cackalacky.com

Foothills Beer

img_2248

Yes, you know I wouldn’t leave you hanging without beer. What better beer to celebrate your North Carolina pride than Foothills.  We all have our favorites, from Carolina Blonde to People’s Porter, Hoppyum or the delightful Jade IPA. Foothills is found all over the place. Our winner will get a special beer that will first be featured at the pub on Fourth Street in Winston-Salem and the Brewery and Tasting Room across town. Then they’ll be available in stores and statewide. Every year, Foothills rolls out new limited release beer on a near monthly basis. They’re calling it the #CraftHappiness IPA of the Month.  For 2017, each new roll-out will be a craft beer that has a meaningful impact, to create awareness for causes that are not so happy. Our winner will receive a bomber of the Domicile IPA.  Knowing that homelessness and lack of shelter and security happen right here in our back yard, the folks at Foothills hope the sales of Domicile can make an impact to a charitable organization or two (or more). Says Foothills, “Each month we’ll bring attention to a different need – a different opportunity to craft happiness for those in our community and in our world.  Being happy doesn’t mean everything is good. It simply means you see the good in everything.”Foothillsbrewing.com

Talk about team spirit. After all, we are all in this together.

We hope you see the good in our Triad area food artisans and restaurants. We think they’re all winners and we love to celebrate them with you. Follow YES! Weekly on Facebook for your chance to win a grocery tote full of these party goods. Winner will be announced the week of Super Bowl LI. See us show the goodies live on the air of WFMY’s Good Morning Show  on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:50am.
