All Local Super Bowl Party Goods & Giveaway

We are stocking our party this year with all local party goods and we’re going to show you how we did it. Heck we’re going one step beyond that and we’re GIVING AWAY a shopping tote of all these goodies to a lucky winner.

It’s all NC baby…come to think of it…probably should’ve done it last year when our own Carolina Panthers kept pounding all the way to the big game. But …oh well. You know you don’t watch the game for the …game. Especially when it’s not your team.

Whether you’re in it for the Falcons or the Pats, it’s all about the food anyway. Here’s what we like for your big game party.

Mozzarella Fellas Pizza, Winston-Salem

gb0a2983

No Super Bowl party is complete without pizza. One of our favorites is the Siciliano from Mozzarella Fellas. This local pizza joint in Winston-Salem is relatively new and business is jumping. Super fresh pizza dough made daily, fresh pasta and locally sourced ingredients. Gluten got you down? You can even order your pizza gluten-free. Our winner will receive a $20 gift card that’s good any time and you can order whatever you like. We hope it’s pizza. PS…if you live in Winston-Salem, Chow Time Taxi can deliver your pizza right to your door. How’s that for teamwork? mozzarellafellas.com   chowtimetaxi.com

West End Coffeehouse Brownies, Winston-Salem

If you were to ask my family, they’d tell you that actually no Super Bowl party is complete without a fresh batch of brownies. And Doritos. But ‘ritos aren’t local so they don’t make the list. But get this. West End Coffeehouse has these delicious, thick, chewy, fudgy brownies that are my little boy’s favorite thing in the world. And a single brownie is as big as his face. But for a reasonable $12, you can order a whole platter of brownies. West End Coffeehouse cuts that baby into 8 squares for their shop, but you can feed your party and then some as that sheet of brownies can easily be cut into 16, 32 or even 64 if you want little bites. They’re fantastic. Winner gets a $20 gift card which will allow you plenty of room for gelato and coffee. For more info on West End Coffeehouse, follow them on Facebook. Chow Time Taxi delivers for West End Coffeehouse too.

Green Mountain Gringo Chips & Salsa

img_2304

Of course, you need chips and salsa at your party right? We got you covered with T.W. Garner’s (makers of Texas Pete) Green Mountain Gringo. The salsa comes in a variety of flavors and heat and is some of the best jarred salsas at the store. The chips….what can we say about the chips? Organic, non-GMO and they taste almost kettle-cooked. Super tasty. They come in convenient strips to make for fun dipping. Winner gets two jars of salsa and a bag each of the white corn and blue corn variety of chips. The salsa is found at about every grocery store around, but the chips are slightly harder to come by as of late and found at Whole Foods In Winston-Salem. But the internet can be your friend…greenmountaingringo.com

SausageWorks Sausage

img_2252

When we want smoked sausage, Italian sausage, kielbasa, brats, we head over to Lowe’s Foods for some SausageWorks. The varieties of sausage are seemingly endless. Really interesting flavors are available in addition to traditional. My favorite is Texas Pete but your game day might require a smoked or bratwurst variety. You do you. It’s all delicious. Lowe’s Foods is giving our winner a pound each of the famous HoppyYummy (infused with Foothills Beer) and Texas Pete (infused with …Texas Pete).

Brewmaster’s Malt Mustard

And to join with your sausages in a delicious play, mustard made with unfermented beer. Al Wolf is a brewmaster at Red Oak Brewing. He takes malted barley and adds super simple ingredients and crunchy mustard seeds for a really tasty, different mustard that’s great in recipes and on sandwiches, worthy of a championship trophy. Al knows a good bit about beer and mustard. He’s a German Braumeister and moved to the states seven years ago to take his gig at Red Oak Brewing. You can catch find his mustard at a number of local stores including Whole Foods, Deep Roots and Lowe’s Foods and if you’re lucky, you can meet him out sampling one day dressed head to foot in traditional Bavarian Lederhosen. Al is so nice and he’d love to speak with you about his mustard and beer. You can also order online brewmastersmalt.com

Uncle Chris Pimento Cheese (Smoky Habanero)

img_2233-2

We love our pate of the South, i.e. pimento cheese. We really love Uncle
Chris’ approachable and traditional spreads, but our favorite is by far is the Smoky Habanero. Look for it in most stores including Lowe’s and stay up to date with them on Facebook. The pimento cheese as just the right amount of kick. You can sizzle up some crumbled sausage and mix it together, dollop it on nachos, put it in a sandwich but what we really hope you do is put it on a pork rind or a cracker (not included) with….

Miss Jenny’s Pickles

img_2232

That’ right. If you’ve been paying attention you know I love a sweet and tangy pickle with a sharp and spicy pimento cheese. All the players are here in our “Super” Game Day tote. Miss Jenny’s + Uncle Chris = Touchdown. I love the Habanero Bread & Butter with the aforementioned pimento cheese, but if that seems too much heat for you, never fear. The Pickle Lady herself was having the best pickle day and the winner gets two jars of Miss Jenny’s. Habanero and Traditional B & B. Found at Lowe’s at lots of local stores as well as Trader Joe’s. missjennyspickles.com

Cackalacky Beer B Q Nuts

img_2173

Cackalacky’s name is synonymous with North Carolina goodness. The Cheerwine Sauce is already close to our heart. The new nut that’s been added to the line-up does not disappoint. It’s a little sweet and a little bit spicy with a great BBQ rub and a hint of beer. You can pick these up at Lowe’s Foods as well. Put one tub out at the party and leave the other for yourself. You deserve it. Winner also gets a sporty winter scarf to show off your Cackalacky spirit. Cheers! cackalacky.com

Foothills Beer

img_2248

Yes, you know I wouldn’t leave you hanging without beer. What better beer to celebrate your North Carolina pride than Foothills.  We all have our favorites, from Carolina Blonde to People’s Porter, Hoppyum or the delightful Jade IPA. Foothills is found all over the place. Our winner will get a special beer that will first be featured at the pub on Fourth Street in Winston-Salem and the Brewery and Tasting Room across town. Then they’ll be available in stores and statewide. Every year, Foothills rolls out new limited release beer on a near monthly basis. They’re calling it the #CraftHappiness IPA of the Month.  For 2017, each new roll-out will be a craft beer that has a meaningful impact, to create awareness for causes that are not so happy. Our winner will receive a bomber of the Domicile IPA.  Knowing that homelessness and lack of shelter and security happen right here in our back yard, the folks at Foothills hope the sales of Domicile can make an impact to a charitable organization or two (or more). Says Foothills, “Each month we’ll bring attention to a different need – a different opportunity to craft happiness for those in our community and in our world.  Being happy doesn’t mean everything is good. It simply means you see the good in everything.”Foothillsbrewing.com

Talk about team spirit. After all, we are all in this together.

We hope you see the good in our Triad area food artisans and restaurants. We think they’re all winners and we love to celebrate them with you. Follow YES! Weekly on Facebook for your chance to win a grocery tote full of these party goods. Winner will be announced the week of Super Bowl LI. See us show the goodies live on the air of WFMY’s Good Morning Show  on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:50am.

Triadfoodies Gift Guide of Glorious Deliciousness…and YES! Weekly Giveaway

Tis the season to be jolly and to support the amazing local artisans that make up the Piedmont Triad. How about avoiding the malls and the centers and instead stroll leisurely at a local market or locally-owned business. You get to avoid the chaos and can feel good about your purchase. Here’s a gift guide for the Holiday 2016. It features some of our most favorite things of the year (and except for the very first one, in no particular order). This gift guide was so good that my food column in YES! Weekly became the COVER this past week. Eeeeeek!  So excited. My parents would be so happy to see this journalism degree at work! Ha ha…or should I say, “Ho, ho, ho!”?

Since it’s the season of giving,  we’re giving away every single one of these items (and then some). Details about where to purchase and how much are also included. Keep reading for how you can win this amazing basket filled with my favorite things of 2016.

Sabor! By Texas Pete $3-$3.50

fullsizerender-16

If there was a #1 most anticipated, most used again and again item of 2016 in my household, it would have to be Texas Pete’s latest hot sauce. Sabor Mexican Style Hot Sauce is TW Garner’s answer to a basic taco sauce. It’s more rustic and spicy than regular Pete, but not with heat. Think spices spicy. We even did a taste test of Sabor with our beloved Chalula and Sabor won hands down. If you haven’t tried it yet, definitely give it a go. You can find it with other Texas Pete hot sauces in just about every grocery store in our region. texaspete.com
The basket is also filled with some other Texas Pete swag: Texas Pete Hot Sauce, CHA!, coozies, and a cap.

Legendary Sunshine Energy Drink $6.99/case drinkthesunshine.com

img_1377

I’ve loved Sunshine for a while. It’s my daughter’s favorite afternoon drink of the year. Just enough lift to get her through the rest of the day. The flagship flavor, Ginger Berry is refreshing and not too sweet. And this year, Sunshine introduced two new flavors, Clementine Twist and Blueberry Lemonade. And then those became favorite drinks of 2016 too. You can find it at many local shops, Mast General Store in Winston-Salem and Lowes Foods. Packed with some ginseng and B12, vitamins and other natural ingredients, organic caffeine and low sugar. Someone who claims to be in the know said it’s a great re-hydrator after an evening of consuming too much adult beverages. It’s the sunshine to moonshine, get it?  Which brings us to…if you haven’t tried them in a cocktail, you definitely should. And that brings us to our next item in the gift guide….

Covington Sweet Potato Vodka

15267662_914127948718572_2454831961477899462_n

It wouldn’t be a Triadfoodies gift guide without some NC Spirits, would it? Each bottle of Covington Vodka is made from 20 pounds of sweet potatoes. Based out of Snow Hill in Eastern NC, it is terrifically pleasing and disappears nicely into any mixer you care to pair it with. Mixologist Jordan Keiper of The Tavern in Old Salem, says it stands up to any top shelf vodka in the stores and that it replaced his Grey Goose. We both have so much confidence in this NC spirit, that Keiper created not one, not two but three craft cocktails in the spirit of our gift guide…one with each flavor of sunshine. And the recipes will be included here and in our winning basket.

The basket includes a bottle of Covington but also some coupons…for when you need a refill.

Gnomestead Hollow Farm & Forage Curry Kraut $10 gnomesteadhollow.com

fullsizerender-15

Where do we begin with this unique and fun farm that produces raw, living vegetable ferments and gourmet mushrooms just into the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the other side of Virginia? Nomads, I mean owners, Jenna and Matt, hail from the Pacific Northwest. They are very smart and adorable and know a lot about vegetables and foraging and gnomes. When we say they are crafting small match ferments, we mean it, five to ten gallons at a time. We love this Curry Kraut because it is not as wonky as the sauerkraut you may have grown up with, rather a lovely, light and crunchy middle eastern flavor. It’s so awesome on deviled eggs and Jenna (JJ) and Matt love it on a burger or the versatility of serving it on eggs. I personally love it on a salad with a homemade thousand island dressing. And also on hummus. Gnomestead is much loved by restaurants in Winston-Salem and you’re likely to find it on a number of menus around town. You can meet them at  Cobblestone Farmers Market where you can purchase any of their krauts, curtido, mushrooms (fresh and dried) and just get to “gnowe” them a little better. (stole that from their website…go visit it at gnomesteadhollow.com).   Gnomestead Hollow products are also found at Let It Grow Produce in WS, Deep Roots Market in GSO, The Blossoming Artichoke and The Only Earth in High Point and Organix Juice Bar in WS.

Niki’s Pickles  $10/pint

fullsizerender-14

It seems only logical that we have another jar of pickles in our gift guide and basket.  If you’re paying attention to some of our local restaurant owners like, Breakfast Queen Mary Haglund of Mary’s Gourmet Diner or the Keipers at The Tavern in Old Salem, you’ll see they do love some of Niki Farrington’s Pickles, dubbed Niki’s Pickles. Indeed they are crispy and have just the right about of delicious dill to make you pretty happy. You can find Niki’s Pickles at the Cobblestone Farmers’s Market, The Living Room Coffee House and Wine Bar in Pilot Mountain and at Mary’s Gourmet Diner in WS.

The winner of our basket will receive a glorious trio of pickles (cuke, radish, cauliflower) and some hot sauce..because it’s the season of giving and Niki is feeling it.

Fogwood Food Buttered Pecan Syrup  $8.49

I first discovered Brenda Sutton’s Fogwood Food Buttered Pecan Syrup at Got To Be NC Competition Dining. It’s like a maple syrup meets pecan praline sauce. It’s delicious on pancakes, waffles, french toast. Great drizzled on biscuits and superb as an ice cream topping. You can do what you want to with it. One of the competition dining chefs made a cheesecake crust with it and it was incredible. Just give it a little stir or warm it up and pour that lovely golden goodness onto something worthy. You can find Fogwood Food products at Lowe’s Foods and markets like Let It Grow Produce in WS.

Not only will the winner get this delicious Buttere Pecan Syrup but the folks at Fogwood wanted our winner to also have their latest baby, Ghost Pepper Jelly, which is totally our jam right now.  It’s spectacular paired with a really sharp cheese…for instance a pimento cheese—try it! Dab a little on top of your cracker with the spread of your choice. It rocks on cream cheese too or grilled cheese. And on a chicken biscuit…with cheese. fogwoodfood.com

B & G Pies  895 Northwest Blvd, WS $1-2

img_1548

Winston-Salem’s own hand-held fried icon. The bakery recently moved their production over to Northwest Blvd. where you can get a fresh pie Monday-Thursday. Otherwise you’ll find these groovy fruity pockets at convenience stores.  We love them all but we especially love apple. Someone told us to melt cheddar on it. What?? You try it and tell us if you agree that it is yummy.

B&G is giving our winner one of each flavor: Apple, Cherry, Lemon, Peach and Chocolate.

Black Mountain Chocolate Fruitcake $15, 732 Trade Street, WS blackmountainchocollate.com

fullsizerender-18

Oh hail, the Queen of Fruitcakes. This fruitcake is not that hard weird doorstop with … are they… cherries?  She was in our gift guide last year and by gracious we just haven’t been able to get her out of our mind the last 11 months so here we are again. It deserves to be here. And you deserve to win this cake. It has neighbor Branch Distillery’s Night Lab Whiskey in it. It’s as boozy as ever and just as chocolatey.  This is an adult fruitcake, ya’ll. Not for the kiddos.

Village Juice Company, 205 South Stratford Road villagejuicecompany.com

img_1450

Since we can’t fit a smoothie bowl or a grain bowl in our gift basket, we will have to give the next best thing. A gift card to enjoy one of the many healthy options at Village Juice. If a smoothie or a cold-pressed juice is more your speed, by all means just grab and go. But we hope you’ll take a seat and enjoy one of their colorful bowls of goodness, particularly the brussels & bacon grain bowl with quinoa. Eat it and you just knocked your body full of vitamins and superfoods and you’ll be ready to take on the world.
VJC is giving our winner a $15 gift card

Chow Time Taxi chowtimetaxi.com

We love Chow Time because they work with some of our wonderful, locally-owned restaurants and businesses. And they think out of the box and don’t just deliver pizza but they’ll deliver coffee from West End Coffeehouse and your grain bowl from VJC (see above) and a whole bunch of other places too.

The winner of our basket is getting a voucher for one FREE delivery of a future order.

Wanna Win It?

Comment on our YES! Weekly Facebook page on what you’d do with one of these amazing products, gift card and voucher. Look for this post. Your name will be entered in a drawing. The winner will be announced December 19. Winner should be from the local area and be able to pick up the prize package in person. Good luck!

Crafted the Art of the Taco is HERE. Let’s Win Something!

Foodies!

Crafted-The Art of the Taco opened today (Wednesday) in Winston-Salem.

img_3454

Let me just say that I have waited FOREVS for this day. Well it seems like forevs ..it’s actually been four years. For some of us anyway. The folks in WS have only had to wait about 6 months.

Keep reading because I’m giving you the scoop and if you visit Crafted in Winston-Salem this Thursday through Saturday you have a chance to win a $25 gift card for a future visit to Crafted.

Boom!

The restaurant that’s a taco joint, not a Mexican restaurant has been the most anticipated new arrival in downtown Winston in quite a while. We were there on Saturday to check things out and again when they officially opened at lunch today. I have been talking to Chef Kris Fuller and her business partner and mom, Rhonda, for a couple of years about bringing themselves to Winston. I sent photos, contacts…I’d scope out a place for lease and text her the info. And it finally happened on Liberty Street in the Arts District. I just love it. It’s cozy, modern, chic, girlie and industrial all in one. And the food is an experience in and of itself.

On the menu…tacos of course. But true to owner, Chef Kris Fuller’s nature, she added a few new things to this location as well because as she says, she likes each new restaurant to feel like it’s own thing. “We added three new burgers so now we have a pretty solid burger menu and because spaces allows for it, you can also make any taco a burger or a rice bowl.” Fuller says because of the lack of space in Greensboro, there have been things she’s been wanting to do that she simply can’t there.

There are a dozen tacos that you can mix and match for a tantalizing duo. I especially love The Fixie, with beef brisket, grilled pineapple, spicy sweet chili sauce and coconut aioli. Mmm..my fave. Also don’t miss the Baja Style, which comes with your choice of protein like grilled or battered fish, seared tuna, chorizo, braised chicken, pulled pork, braised beef, and a half dozen vegetarian options too like sweet potato, tofu and falafel. We went with the tuna and I highly recommend it. Seafood lovers would also love the Bowtie which features beer battered fish, roasted corn and poblano salsa, sweet chipotle aioli and honey mustard. There’s certainly a taco and a burger to make you happy. As for appetizers, try the stuffed avocado with chorizo, queso and pico de gallo served with fried flour tortilla chips that are flaky and scrumptious. The taquitos are really great too. You also can’t go wrong with a mason of bacon…heck it’s got Mexican chocolate drizzled on it and it actually perfect for dessert. There are salads on the menu and a few kid items as well.

Fuller, who opened up the first Crafted in Greensboro four years ago and Crafted-The Art of Street Food last year, says this day feels really good. “In Greensboro we were really busy right out of the gate and they showed us a lot of support, but with Winston knowing who we were and coming to the area, I can’t tell you the amount of love and support I see daily.” She says, “Even when we we’d go out to other restaurants around here, we’d get that excitement. It’s been quite amazing.” We knew it would be like that because Winston is a community…there’s just no other way to say it.

img_2425

Fuller comes from a fine dining background (remember The Bistro at Adams Farm?) and says she hopes to use the Winston-Salem location as her creative outlet for future pop-ups and wine dinners. I think that would be super fun and the Winston-Salem location will be a great location for it. But for now, Fuller says her full concentration is getting Winston’s Crafted settled. “We do have a five year plan and we have a couple of other cities in mind.” I’m thinking Durham but I did not ask because I like to be surprised, foodies.

But for now, Chef says it’s just one restaurant at a time and that means getting cozy with Winston-Salem. And you know it’s already happening because Winston-Salem isn’t just the city of Arts and Innovation. It’s also a city of foodie love and we think she is the perfect fit!

Welcome Fullers and the entire Crafted Team!  I love these ladies. Support this great restaurant and team, foodies.

Now!! Want to win a prize???

The Fresh Market’s Fresh Look AND you can win a $50 Gift Card!

The Fresh Market recently underwent some “freshening up” …take a look!

the_fresh_market_greensboro-7-1

The company, based out of Greensboro, has always had a top-notch almost specialty type store. You could go there for great local items, that awesome butcher shop, fresh seasonal produce, hard to find oils, sauces…a stellar cheese section, etc. But you couldn’t just find your common every day items (think common name brand toilet paper and name brand laundry detergent, a baby section or Cheerios). TFM took a cue from customers and expanded their offerings, including a baby section AND a vitamin and body shop. There’s also a huge focus on more local items, highlighting the farms that supply them and easy signage for gluten-free, non-gmo and organics.  I was at the Grand Re-Opening on Highwoods in Greensboro and they took me on a tour. You’ll find a similar change at the other two Triad stores (Winston-Salem and on Lawndale in Greensboro) and eventually they’ll roll out the Raleigh area and Charlotte in late November and in continuing waves throughout the country through early 2018.

Here’s a sneak peek at what has changed. But you should check them out in person. I think you’ll be happy about what you’ll find.

Local, highlighting the farms in the region….

Same great items you’ve loved plus a new vitamin and body section with a staff member for that section to answer your questions…this used to be the wine section which is now stacked and categorized nearby…

And now you can do your shopping in one place with those non-specialty items that you probably had to go make a run for at a 2nd stop like baby items, pet and paper products…

img_3202….

I love going to The Fresh Market. I always have. I joke with my kids that they take away from the experience because they are always rushing me (when I don’t want to be rushed…not there). Then there’s the whole bribing with a chocolate chip cookie, etc. So you know what we’re dealing with here. But the chocolate chip cookie is so worth it 🙂 The most dramatic change is apparent when you nl longer see the bins and antiques full of the bulk candies and nuts. Those items now have their own row to make room for new rows of the expanded offerings.

One thing I loved is the great sampling and pre-prepped foods area right in front. You don’t have to go to the back. Get in and out with your chopped veggies and some chicken kabobs or meatballs, and turn around and check out and you’re out the door without walking more than 25 feet. The recipes and samplings change every week.  Dinner is prepped and all you have to do is cook it. Also special to the Highwoods store, is a juice and smoothie bar out front.

It’s almost like The Fresh Market took a little bit about what we love from some of our favorite grocery chains. The fun and ease of specially priced items, pre-chopped and ready to cook meals like you’ll find at Publix, easy identifiable organic, non-gmo and gluten-free as we’d find at Whole Foods, and lots more local items marked “local” and now the every day items. They’ve also lowered prices on thousands of items while keeping that awesome cheese shop, bakery, butchery and deli that you’ve loved for years. Nothing was taken away, just added awesomeness. Just a note…if you don’t see something there that you know is a must, you can visit their website and make a suggestion.

So foodies, they’ve given me a $50 gift card to giveaway to a lucky reader. Just comment below or on my social media pages what your favorite item is at The Fresh Market. I’ll draw next Friday!

Cackalacky Giveaway!

If you live in Nor’ Cackalacky, you’ve probably heard of Cackalacky. Heck even if you live farther away, you might have heard of this amazing NC-based company with its delicious sauces and peanuts. They do just a few things. But that’s what makes them so stupendous. This Siler City-based company does those things and they do them very well.

What could be under here?? Revealing the prize package!

The Cackalacky Sweet Cheerwine BBQ Sauce is a legend unto itself.  It  was a “favorite thing” a few years ago…you can read about it here. Add that to another zingy sauce made from Sweet Potatoes. They even have their own eponymously named beer, brewed by Full Steam Brewery. It’s a wonderful ginger-spiced pale ale that’s great with all things grilled and party. There’s also Cackalacky Spiced Peanuts made similarly to the Spicy sauce (they are QUITE spicy-mmmmm) and now….the Beer-B-Q Peanuts…Jumbo-sized peanuts with a hint of beer and BBQ. I’ve been waiting several weeks for these little legumes to make their appearance at my local Lowes Foods. Getting a little impatient with my store, I reached out to the folks at Cackalacky and they sent me a prize pack for a lucky winner (and a taste for me)! Thanks, friends!

fullsizerender

A glimpse of the prize pack with one of those nuts being for “research purposes by me.”

By the way, the Beer-B-Q nuts are utterly fantastic. They are sweet and savory with a bit of a kick and hint of beer. They are so good just for snacking but I bet they’d be great in a salad too.

img_0098

img_0099

In the prize pack, a couple of the new Beer-B-Q nuts, a large bottle of the Cackalacky Cheerwine Sweet Sauce, and some swaggy items you’ll love, like a souvenir glass, frisbee, bumper stickers to proclaim your fandom and some coozies. Fun!

Comment below follow us on Facebook and reply on your favorite way to enjoy anything Cackalacky. Tag a friend and share the post too. At the end of next week, we’ll draw a winner. And then we’ll arrange a way to get your winnings to you. 🙂

And stay tuned for the holidays. I have a feeling these nuts and maybe another Cackalacky item might make it on the 2016 triadfoodies Holiday Gift Guide. And you’ll want to see how to get your hands on that!

You can find Cackalacky in many local grocery stores. If you’re in NC, just check out the “local” section.

Cheers!
