foodie b’eat: Help a Local Chef Advance to the Top 16 in a National Competition!

September is National Breakfast Month. And two of the Triad’s most beloved chefs will represent their cities in Thomas’ Breads Hometown Breakfast Battle. This isn’t necessarily a “local” purveyor of goods, but it’s fun and a way for you to support our local chefs. Let’s get all the nooks and crannies, shall we?

Greensboro Chef Chris Blackburn from Scrambled and Winston-Salem Chef John Bobby from A Noble Grille (yes, that’s the right new name)  will represent their towns in Hometown Breakfast Battle – a national chef recipe competition featuring 135 chefs from 135 cities across the country who will battle it out to create America’s best breakfast in honor of the 135th Anniversary of the Thomas’ brand.

Each chef has created one locally inspired recipe using a variety of Thomas’ iconic English Muffins and Bagels and added some local flair to breakfast – the most important meal of the day. Chef Chris Blackburn’s take is a Brown Butter Charred Thomas’ English Muffin Sandwich,

foodie b’eat: Big News! Jay Pierce Returns to Greensboro

Chef-Jay-Pierce.13866

Foodies!

Jay. Pierce. Is. Coming. Back!

Best news ever!

I spoke with Marty Kotis this weekend and Jay Pierce gave me additional details about what is really an exciting opportunity for chef and really, foodies, we’ll ALL benefit!

After a brief stint with Rocksalt in Charlotte, Pierce, who formerly worked for Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen, has been lured back to Greensboro to become Executive Chef of The Marshall Free House, a UK-inspired Gastropub and flagship restaurant for the Marty Kotis company, Kick Ass Concepts. In case you missed our blog review about MFH, check it out here.

Pierce will begin his new role on September 22 at MFH, but Kotis says the chef will eventually oversee all of the restaurants in the group, including Darryl’s Wood-fired Grill, Burger Warfare and Pig Pounder Brewery. Kotis says, “We’re really excited to be able to convince him to come back to our area. Jay will be able to offer his team members the opportunity to grow and move up within the company with what we are doing in Greensboro, as well as any expansion in other cities.” That means Pierce will be involved in future projects as well, including  a couple of new concepts that Kotis has up his sleeve, like the new beer garden and speakeasy that will be located near the Railyard in Downtown Greensboro and an Argentine Restaurant & Tapas spot called the Vineyard Grill, which will be located behind the Village Tavern off of Battleground Avenue. Kotis is also toying around with the idea of a savory biscuit place, also in the newly dubbed “Midtown” area. In the future, Kotis says we should also see Pierce overseeing an anticipated Midtown Farmers Market, an urban-type outdoor market featuring local produce and provisions….

foodie b’eat: Scrambled Southern Diner via CHOW at YES! Weekly

Green Eggs & Ham (Chorizo, Dippy Egg, Salsa Verde, Chile-Lime Crema on hash browns.

Oh, foodies…how my heart was broken after my beloved Josephine’s Kitchen stopped dinner service earlier this summer. Gracious, what a bummer. But when Chef Chris Blackburn and his partner, Sarah Keith, announced a “new beginning,” well, we knew that what they had up their jacket sleeves would probably be pretty fantastic.

So after a couple months of waiting, Scrambled Southern Diner is open. It’s breakfast and brunch all day—they took beginning and made it literal. But, they have lunch and blue plate specials too. I joke that they’ve closed one of my favorite restaurants to serve my least favorite meal ….breakfast (yeah, I know I’m a weirdo).

Read here about what’s in store for this new eatery.   It’s already pretty popular.  And they even please me, the foodie who couldn’t care less about breakfast. 🙂

When you check it out, let us know what you think!

foodie b’eat: Triad Local First’s 5th Annual Community Table via CHOW in YES! Weekly

Old Mill at Guilford

Community Table is an event that is near and dear to my heart as are most of the folks involved with Triad Local First. All local, all the time. The Community Table is a fundraiser for TLF’s Buy Local Campaign which launches every holiday season to help promote members’ businesses.

It’s a great cause, but I’m telling you, it’s a GREAT dinner prepared by a local chef who’s using locally sourced ingredients that have been donated by TLF members. Even the flatware and dinnerware are on loan. This year, the event will take place at the Old Mill of Guilford.

Read more here about this event in my latest column in CHOW at Yes Weekly. Here we talk about how TLF is crossing the county line and reaching out to chefs in Winston-Salem. Awesome!

Rest assured triadfoodies will be there to share with you all the amazingness. But it’d be even better if you were there!

You can get your tickets here!
